Pi Beta Phi

at Hillsdale College

Champions are Readers (CAR) is a great opportunity for our members to serve in the local community. It is a national literacy program which was adapted by the Literacy Committee in 2003 using the creative concept originated by the Houston, TX Alumnae Club. It is designed for all Pi Beta Phi alumnae clubs and collegiate chapter to easily conduct. CAR targets children in the third grade who are at a critical juncture in developing both good reading skills and a life-long love of reading.

The program is a month-long reading enrichment program for third graders. CAR improves reading skills, instills a lifelong love of reading and promotes family literacy. The Michigan Alphas entered into Bailey Elementary this year read with third graders who needed some extra reading help. Pi Beta Phi members host an assembly to introduce CAR to the students. The students are then challenged to read 15 minutes at home each day with family and friends. In order to keep track of their time spent reading, members of Pi Beta Phi give each student an interactive CAR. literacy workbook, which includes a bookmark and folder, to record their reading progress each day on a "reading racetrack" in the workbook. Pi Phi then provides snacks and refreshments at a finale assembly to honor each child at the end of CAR with a certificate of recognition, a new book and a CAR medal.

Book Drives are a great way for our chapter to get involved with Read > Lead > Achieve in small ways throughout the semester. We typically will host a campus wide book drive every semester. Look out for more information to come about this semester's project!

Fraternity Day of Service is Pi Beta Phi’s International Day of Literacy-related service celebrated in honor of Dr. Seuss’® birthday. Clubs, chapters and individual Pi Phis across the globe host books fairs, read with children and promote reading in their local communities on or around March 2 every year. Each chapter and club celebrates differently with the common thread of advocating the importance of reading. Michigan Alpha has had a tradition of participating in our national book drive and distribution event in Detroit.
